The Battlemen serve as the primary armed force and militia of Tanglestone. They serve both day and night, though they relax their duties significantly after dark in deference to the Night Sweepers. Mostly they stand watch and drill, drawing some small tithes of food and supplies from the city as a whole. When a particular menace crawls its way free into the light, the Battlemen are called in, and their wages increase as the other imperiled guild-clans attempt to bolster the soldiers’ strength. They also take commissions to train others in self-defense; with the exception of the Night Sweepers and Sewerjacks (and perhaps the Mappers), any guilder who knows how to really fight probably learned it from a Battleman.
Battlemen are largely recognizable for their crenel-marked patterning, usually painted along a shield or weapon haft, or embroidered into a tunic or tabard. Their gear is highly variable and sometimes asymmetric, given that many Battlemen inherit or scavenge it rather than being issued fresh-forged arms. At least a dozen different schools of arms prosper among the guild-clan, with spear and sword and mace only slightly more prevalent than punch-dagger, flail, war-scythe or the like.
The Fortress is the primary bastion of the Battlemen, the seat of their order. They keep smaller chapterhouses as well to be nearer the action: one along the north wall, and one said to be in the central portion of the city.
