Keepers

The Keepers are the guild-clan dedicated to tending the temple complexes of the Mysteria. They are generally divided into eighteen small sub-groups, each one focusing on the shrine-vault of one god in particular, as well as a smattering of guilders who focus on the temple complex as a whole. They are one of the most remarkably diverse of guild-clans in personality and personal ethos; those who tend the shrine of the Blade are very unlike those of the Storm, who are themselves quite unlike those of the Breath. However, all have the same general requirements for rising in rank: contemplation and penetration of the inner mysteries of each god’s cult. As a result, the acolytes of different vaults are usually remarkably different, while the Heirologians tend to be introspective, patient and sometimes maddeningly inscrutable.

The exact ranks of the Keepers (and they are fond of ranks) vary between vaults. The basis of the guild-clan is the acolyte rank, who sees to the more mundane affairs of the vault. Initiates into the higher orders are known by many secret names, but all prefer to have outsiders call them “Caretaker”. The senior priest of each god is called the Hierologian, the master or mistress of that vault’s rites.

Keepers wear vestments of office, adorned with some emblem of the vault and god they serve. A Caretaker of the Breath, for instance, wears a small golden bellows around his neck, while acolytes of the Shield carry small bucklers with them. Caretakers and Hierologians usually prefer hooded vestments and some form of mask or veil, hiding their faces as a sign that they are now part of the mysteries that surround their deities.
