The Night Sweepers are, by tradition, those who keep the streets of Tanglestone clean by night. The guild-clan accepts this task as having multiple responsibilities: first, to remove debris and trash from the streets, and second, to keep the streets safe from any threats that may have crept into Tanglestone by way of cunning little holes. A third duty, not implicit in the guild-clan’s ledgers but understood by all, is to placate and honor the shrines of the Lower Gods. Harmless drudges, callous assassins and devout acolytes all rub elbows in the Shadow Cloisters. They are largely human, typically with the gray skin of a subterranean guild-clan, with a smaller proportion of halflings and elves, and rumors of the occasional exotic (such as tieflings or genasi).
A number of divisions make it difficult to characterize the Night Sweepers as a whole, the two most significant being cult and station. Nine cults exist, each one dedicated to one of the Lower Gods. Three stations are also upheld: the Drudge, the Stalker and the Disciple. The Drudges are those who see to the simple duty of keeping the streets clean of litter and debris; many Drudges are also aspirants to the Stalker or Disciple stations who have yet to prove their merit. Stalkers are those Night Sweepers tasked with the removal of direct threats; most are trained in combat and stealth, though some (such as the poisoner Milarcen or the armorer Amercier) are skilled laborers who play largely support roles within the guild-clan. Finally, the Disciples direct their attention to the maintenance of the Shadow Cloisters’ temple vaults, and lead any religious rituals of their cults. These lines are often blurred, however; a Night Sweeper might devote herself to multiple cults, and some Disciples may serve as Stalkers or even as Drudges for their own obscure reasons.
The Night Sweepers are principally based in the Shadow Cloisters, beneath the Mysteria, but they maintain a number of secret safehouses throughout northern Tanglestone. They keep a number of tunnels and secret passages that are known to the guild-clan alone, all the better for keeping their work tidily out of the view of others.
