The Noble Manses
Still in northern Tanglestone proper, but just on the periphery of the central part of the city, stand the Manses of Tanglestone’s eleven noble houses. Each Manse comprises a manor the size of a city block, a section of grounds and gardens, and a few lesser structures (such as gymnasiums, honeymoon towers, or schools) enclosed by a high outer wall. A Manse is typically built of stone that reflects the house colors in some way, such as the basalt slabs of House Sable or the tawny stones of House Fulvous, and banners and reliefs mark the outer walls as well as the architecture.
At present, the Manses interact little with the rest of the city. Most open their gates only once a month, allowing in shipments of food from the Kitchens and a few goods from Crafter Block, and sending the bearers home with some odd hand-me-downs or curios from the Manse vaults. Two of the Manses are sealed entirely, their gates wrapped with chains and padlocks whose keyes have been locked. The Ochre and Umber Manses are considered “dead” to greater Tanglestone, as are the families within. However, the occasional would-be thief from Detritus goes missing over an Ochre or Umber wall, and is never seen again.
